From Translator to Localization Manager

When I first started translating professionally in the mid-90s, computer-assisted translation (CAT) was still somewhat of a novelty. Doubting Thomas's, who were only used to translating Word documents and relied on "feeling" to translate complex concepts, dismissed the use of CAT tools in the belief that only human translators can produce authentic text. That may be true, but today, most translators embrace new technology and see the benefits - in terms of quality improvements and shorter time-to-market - through the efficient use of tools, such as translation memory, and integrated workflow processes, such as terminology management.

When your English can throw a “spanner” or a “wrench” in the works – a case for international intelligibility in technical documentation

Most people have a stronger preference for either the English of Bill Gates or the Queen’s English, but are not really aware of all the differences. Technical documentation increasingly calls for a less one-sided approach to writing in English and is noticeable in the growing trend of "international English".

Quality has its price – language as a cost factor

Language displays specific features that can influence the linguistic quality of content and extend or restrict documentation use. However, language is seldom quantified in the same way as the features and performance of other products and services. Integrating the work of technical writers, copy editors, translators, and other documentation specialists in a comprehensive quality-assurance process can significantly improve documentation quality, streamline documentation processes, and lead to greater customer satisfaction.

Writing comprehensive single-source English

The quality, reusability and translatability of documentation have become increasingly important. A logical writing system for English as the source language is imperative.
