As an experienced writer in technical documentation, I have been swept along by the vast developments in the industry: from punched cards (which I first saw in my first semester of study), to text files with proprietary markup language on mainframe computers, to FrameMaker operating on Sun Microsystems and structured FrameMaker in Windows, right up to XML and document management systems.Agile and eXtreme – The Future of Technical Documentation Our products have never been highly sought-after products that people saved for, or waited impatiently to call their own. But even if they were never truly loved, they were at least considered useful, even indispensable, if you wanted to learn to use a device or a new software program. However, even this is now being called into question. The term "controlled language" is used more and more frequently to make technical documentation easier to understand, and to improve the efficiency of documentation processes. Companies that operate internationally, such as SAP, BMW, and Siemens, already use controlled languages. But what exactly is controlled language and how does it benefit technical writing?Single-Sourcing for Training and Presentation Materials Today, businesses invest highly in the development of their business processes. As a result, the localization of documentation products has gradually become established as an independent industry. Also, an increasing number of companies are now offering localization services.Across - a Versatile Translation Memory Translation Memories (TMs) are an important tool for translators: they save previously translated sentences and display these as "matches" when the same or a similar sentence must be translated at a later date. TMs are particularly good for translating technical documentation because technical documents often contain a lot of repetition. Across Systems GmbH has just launched the latest version of the company's TM, "Across" Version 5.0. This article explains how Across works in everyday use.Quick, Free, and Ready-to-Use: The Wiki Concept Speed and cost have always been, and are increasingly, key factors in documentation. Doubting Thomas's, who were only used to translating Word documents and relied on "feeling" to translate complex concepts, dismissed the use of CAT tools in the belief that only human translators can produce authentic text. That may be true, but today, most translators embrace new technology and see the benefits - in terms of quality improvements and shorter time-to-market - through the efficient use of tools, such as translation memory, and integrated workflow processes, such as terminology management.Author-it 5.0 - A Revolution in Content Reuse Ein Vortrag von Paul Trotter auf dem 7. Deutschen Single-Source-Forum am 18. Juni 2007 in München. Most people have a stronger preference for either the English of Bill Gates or the Queen’s English, but are not really aware of all the differences. Technical documentation increasingly calls for a less one-sided approach to writing in English and is noticeable in the growing trend of "international English".Quality has its price – language as a cost factor Language displays specific features that can influence the linguistic quality of content and extend or restrict documentation use. However, language is seldom quantified in the same way as the features and performance of other products and services. Integrating the work of technical writers, copy editors, translators, and other documentation specialists in a comprehensive quality-assurance process can significantly improve documentation quality, streamline documentation processes, and lead to greater customer satisfaction.Rules for Writing Technical Documentation Words and sentences can have multiple meanings, which is desirable in literary writing. However, ambiguity in technical documentation only leads to confusion.Single Source in Technical Documentation There is such an ever-growing abundance of information, we often feel as if we are drowning in a flood of information. Neither producers nor users have this overwhelming quantity of data under control. To combat this, we are always looking for ways and means to push this wealth of information back to a controllable level. Single source publishing is a strategy that promises to be an effective solution to this problem. Comet, one of the leading providers of technical documentation in Germany developed a customized solution for a WebHelp-based information portal. It offers information about a training center and its courses. We integrated a database-based solution to update course information interactively, as required. Vortrag tekom-Jahrestagung 2004 - Prof. Sissi ClossWriting comprehensive single-source English The quality, reusability and translatability of documentation have become increasingly important.
